The Googlization of Culture

google_sm.gif"The Googlization of Culture" is Suva Vaidhyanathan keynote address and panel discussion topic to be delivered at at the 5th Annual Symposium on Intellectual Property - Copyright at a Crossroads: The Impact of Mass Digitization on Copyright and Higher Education - held at University of Maryland's UMUC campus.

This year's theme examines the controversy surrounding ambitious plans to digitize and index the massive library collections of some of the largest library collections of some of the largest libraries in the nation and the positive and negative effect it may have on copyright law, consumers, educators, authors and publishers. The symposium will address key questions such as :

- who should own, manage, and have access to our world of knowledge ?

- are the current entrepreneurial efforts more contrary to the principles of academic scholarship than traditional publishing ?

Besides professor Vaidhyanathan (New York University, Steinhardt School in the Department of Culture and Communication), additional panelists are Alan Davidson (Google), Allan Adler (Association of American Publishers) and Jonathan Band (Jonathan Band, PLLC).

The symposium will be held June 14-16, 2006 at the The Center for Intellectual Property
at University of Maryland University College (Adelphi, MD). Symposium particulars can be found at http://www.umuc.edu/cip/symposium .
