Kanji Pocket Assistant
A discussion on SenseiOnline led to a review of pocket dictionaries. The winner was a Palm Zire running PAdict which supports hiragana, katakana, kanji, romanji, english, and french dictionaries.
PAdict, a SourceForge project, was created by Lars Grunewaldt, draws on the Jim Breen's edict project, with a team of handwriting recognition folks (Ivan Kanis, Robert Wells, Todd David Rudick, Owen Taylor), kanji recongnition (Stephan Matthiesen), font support (Benoit Cerrina), and Japanese PalmOS integration (Kenji Baheux).
An amazing amount of "knowledge" in a handheld device that meets the 1000 yuan criteria.
Note: There is a slight gotcha. The complete minimum package requires over 2 Mbyte, so it won't run on older versions of the Zire. The newer Zire 21 comes with 8 Mbyte of RAM, so that's not a problem for someone just getting started.
