Handel's Messiah
I've just added an n-th version of the Messiah to the collection, This one is a London 1976 recording of the London 1743 version performed by Neville Marriner and the Academy and Chorus of St. Martin-in-the-fields: Elly Ameling, soprano; Anna Reynolds, alto; Philip Landgridge, tenor; Gwynne Howell, bass. Total timing. 140.23.
Two things have immediately stood out. One is the continuo work. I first though it was the organ continuo, but reading the booklet notes shows a second organ, the chamber organ (played by Christopher Hogwood). And a harpsichord thrown in for good measure.
My earlier versions of the Messiah are larger ones - the Colin Davis production (with Janet Baker, I think), and the Robert Shaw production.
The album cover shows a cropped version of Correggio's Adoration of the Child (by the Virgin).
Only glitch is that the inter track timing in iTunes is a bit abrupt ... wonder if that is a setting I can fix.
London, 444-824-2.
